SUMMARY:Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth' @ The Seymour Centre\, Wednesday 25th March\, 2026 - 11.30am
DESCRIPTION:SEYMOUR CENTRE and SPORT FOR JOVE present ‘MACBETH’\n\n“Blood will have blood”\nShakespeare’s Macbeth returns in 2026\, bold\, visceral\, and more relevant than ever. \nAfter a smash-hit season and national tour in 2025\, Sport for Jove’s acclaimed production of Macbeth\, directed by George Banders\, is back at Seymour Centre for the Arts Education Program. This contemporary reimagining is a thrilling theatrical experience for students in Years 7 – 11\, offering a powerful introduction to Shakespeare’s language\, themes\, and dramatic form. \nSet in a world where ambition overrides morality and power corrupts absolutely\, an unexpected prophecy sends a national war hero and his brilliant wife as they spiral into a fever-dream for control. Shakespeare’s haunting tragedy combines Scottish and English history with Greek myth\, revealing a world where double-speak reigns\, violence is seductive\, and loyalty is a rare and precious thing. \nThis muscular\, modern production speaks directly to today’s students\, exploring the cost of ambition\, the fragility of conscience\, and the consequences of sacrificing humanity for personal gain. In an age obsessed with fame and influence\, Macbeth asks what happens when nature itself begins to fight back? \nSport for Jove’s Macbeth is boldly imaginative and true to the text\, filled with striking visuals\, rich performances\, and engaging revelations. It’s a fantastic introduction to Shakespeare for young people. \nImage credit: Dowling and Dowling Designs \n“What a fantastic production – my students loved it and were able to visualise the text and gain a tangible grasp of the plot\, characters and timeless themes of Macbeth!” \nRachel Greenwood\, Head English Teacher at Lucas Heights Community School \n“The contextual changes certainly stimulated lots of questions and discussions with our students back at school. We thank you for a valuable theatre experience for our students\, some of whom have never been to the theatre. A trip well worth all the planning! Look forward to seeing other productions in the future.” \nRachel Greenwood\, Head Teacher of English at Lucas Heights Community School \nAge recommendation: 12yrs + (under 16 year olds must be accompanied by a paying adult) \nYOU MUST BE A SHEN MEMBER TO BOOK TICKETS.  PLEASE ONLY BOOK FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY. \nIf you chose Companion Card ticket\, please email ex********@******rg.au immediately after purchase with a copy of your Companion Card.

SUMMARY:Junior Herbalist Club
DESCRIPTION:Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) is a 1-3 year extracurricular course for children (aged 7+) which runs for 90 minutes\, once a month\, for 10 months of the year. \nJunior Herbalist Club has been designed to engage and educate children\, on a journey of discovery through play to learn about the healing and medicinal plants all around them in a safe and supervised environment. The course covertly incorporates core subjects including English\, Maths\, Biology\, Chemistry\, Botany\, Latin and Cookery\, as well as helps children to gain in confidence\, improve fine motor control and develop a new skill set. \nEach month the children learn about the medicinal uses of plants and make something to take home (lavender bags\, lip balms\, bath bombs and much more!!). JHC has been planned so that each month the children build on their knowledge and skills. In the second year\, the tasks become more complex\, building on the skill set developed in the first year. At the end of each session the children are given a worksheet to complete so they can develop a portfolio of learning. \nThe course includes: \n\nIdentification of common herbs growing all around\nSafety – which herbs are safe to use and which are poisonous\nFolklore – taught through stories and songs\nHow to grow and harvest herbs\nMedicinal uses of common herbs\nHow to use a variety of common herbs for first aid\nHow to make a variety of herbal preparations to keep and take home\nRespect for all plants and their environment\n\nJHC was created and developed by Medical Herbalist Mel Hornby and has been delivering herbal education to children in the UK since 2014\, and is now available in Australia for the first time. \nHere is some feedback from previous years: \n“I really enjoyed learning the different uses of herbs and about the variety of plants\, especially the ones that are often considered weeds\, and are actually beneficial and can be used in a number of ways. I liked how we would make things at the end of the lesson to show us how to put the properties of the plant into practice. I liked how the classes were set outside and how they were practical. The plants weren’t just pictures in a book. We could see\, touch and smell them. I liked how each week was a different plant or two. Made it easy to focus on rather than just having a brief overview on a bunch of things.” ~Allie \n“I have learnt about how plants and nature can help us to heal our bodies\, and that we can make our own medicines without going to the doctor for everything. I enjoyed watching Virginia prepare and cook the herbs to make medicines from nature\, and learning in a group with other homeschoolers. I would recommend other children come to JHC next year because in every class there is something new that you will find out about. Also you get to take something home at the end of every class – that the group has made.” ~Eloise \n \n  \n  \nVirginia Maddock has been a qualified herbalist since 2000 and will be continuing this wonderful education in plant healing for children in the Sutherland Shire\, starting in February. (Other areas will be considered with appropriate numbers of bookings\, so get in contact and get a group together!). \nCost is $400 per year (or 4 x $120 paid each term). Monthly on Thursdays in Caringbah South at 10:30am-12pm (numbers dependent). \n  \n  \n  \nDates:\nFebruary 19\nMarch 19\nApril 23\nMay 21\nJune 18\nJuly 23\nAugust 20\nSeptember 17\nOctober 15\nNovember 19 \nEmail: vi******@*******************om.au for enquiries and expressions of interest.

SUMMARY:Woodworking classes for homeschoolers (Term 1) - Weekly on Wed in February
DESCRIPTION:Woodwork for start of 2026!  3 spots remaining. \n\n\n\nWe have secured a woodwork class for this term at ‘Among the Trees’ in Marrickville – both Luke and Noel are available for us starting Wed 4 Feb.\n\n\n\nTiming is same as last year with two teachers (each student also needs an adult helper): \n\nFour sessions on Wednesdays 1-2.30pm at Among The Trees in Marrickville.\nWednesday 4 Feb\nWednesday 11 Feb\nWednesday 18 Feb\n\nWednesday 25 Feb \n\n\n\nCost: $360 per child – we need 10 kids (7 spaces already taken). Ages 8 and up.  Each child needs an adult to attend with them.\n\n\n\nThe project Luke has suggested is a stool which is a self contained activity (ie: you come out with a stool after 4 weeks) but then\, trickily\, those wanting to do second term can turn it into a chair. So you can make it a 1-2 term activity where skills build\, with satisfying outcomes each time.\n\n\nPlease email su************@***il.com (SHEN member and one of one of the HS attendees\, coordinating our booking and payments) if you are interested.  Or text Sue on 0417 166 862.

SUMMARY:Sydney Dance Company performance of 'Continuum' - 30th October\, 2025 @12pm high school matinee - recommended age 12yrs-19yrs
DESCRIPTION:Continuum is a bold exploration of the ever-shifting cadence that binds us to the world\, inspired by the constant flow of movement and transformation that mirrors the evolving nature of life. \nThrough the visionary perspectives of choreographers Rafael Bonachela\, Tra Mi Dinh and Stephen Page AO\, this triple bill offers three unique reflections on humanity\, light and our place in the cycle of existence. \nContinuum sweeps across a spectrum of lived experience\, from the fleeting beauty of twilight to the elemental force of breath. It is a journey through time and place\, where movement echoes with the ebb and flow of life’s narratives. A celebration of the continuous journey of transformation and the subtle forces of nature that connect us all. \nAn enchanting world premiere from Rafael Bonachela will draw upon his signature choreographic style\, to explore the limits of emotional and physical expression. To conjure a dynamic sorcery between the quiet and the monumental\, the intimate to the expansive. \nIn Somewhere Between Ten and Fourteen\, Tra Mi Dinh exposes the delicate space between day and night. A fleeting moment of transition where bodies drift and pulse\, surrendering to the ever-shifting movement of time and light. An ode to change that captures the transience of life’s continual shifts. \nFor the first time\, Unungkati Yantatja – one with the other\, brings together the powerful creative forces of Stephen Page with esteemed composer and leading Yidaki player William Barton. Page’s choreography embodies Barton’s song line\, calling out to land\, sea\, sky\, and creature\, whilst carefully connecting us all to the spirit of our creation breath. Barton will be joined live in performance by the award-wining Omega Ensemble\, who commissioned the underlying powerful score. Blown gently across the stage\, Unungkati Yantatja is a dedication to the force of our earthly breaths\, intrinsically connecting us to country\, to each other\, and the continual rhythm of life. \nPerformance duration: 90 minutes.  \nYOU MUST BE A SHEN MEMBER TO BOOK TICKETS.  PLEASE ONLY BOOK FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY. \nTicket sales will end on the 12th August\, unless sold out beforehand. \nPlease ensure you choose the correct ticket option when you are paying.  People choosing Companion Card ticket must email a copy of the Companion Card to SHEN immediately after booking ticket(s).

SUMMARY:‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’ music\, puppetry and live video projection @Sydney Opera House\, Wednesday 13th August\, 2025 - 10am
DESCRIPTION:A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings\nInspired by the story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez\nA magic-realist gem of theatre and storytelling from Ireland\, using a combination of music\, puppetry and live video projection.\n\nA rich exploration of human nature\n\nFor students who love exquisite\, beautifully crafted theatre\, a magical realist gem inspired by legendary novelist Gabriel García Márquez’s darkly comic fairy tale\, Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes. \nIn a kitchen\, in a theatre\, two storytellers and their audience discover something remarkable – a very old man with enormous wings – and invite us to speculate who he is. A neighbour believes he’s an angel\, a priest claims he’s an imposter.  Pilgrims flock to see him\, hoping to be healed by him. They leave with something different than what they expected. \nWinner of Best Design at the Dublin Fringe (2019)\, talented theatre maker Dan Colley has created a perfect show for students gorgeously formed around music\, puppetry and live video\, but also thoughtful and emotionally rich in its exploration of human nature. \n“Fifty minutes of near theatrical perfection.” The Arts Review \nThe show duration is 60 minutes (45 minutes performance and 15 minutes Q&A). \nConsider also purchasing a ticket in the accompanying workshop ‘Stagecraft Design’ on Wednesday 13th August at 12.30pm for an additional $15.50. \nYOU MUST BE A SHEN MEMBER TO BOOK TICKETS.  PLEASE ONLY BOOK FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY. \nPlease ensure you choose the correct ticket option when you are paying.  People choosing Companion Card ticket must email a copy of the Companion Card to SHEN immediately after booking ticket(s).

SUMMARY:Bell Shakespeare Secondary Workshop - 'Romeo and Juliet' Wed 6th August 2.30pm-4.30pm (Ages 11 - 15)
DESCRIPTION:Secondary Workshop- Romeo and Juliet \nTHIS WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED TO BE A CONTINUATION OF LAST YEAR’S SHAKESPEARE WORKSHOP.  YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE DONE LAST YEAR’S WORKSHOP TO DO THIS ONE.  YOU ALSO DON’T NEED TO KNOW THE PLAY TO DO THIS WORKSHOP. \n2.30pm – 4.30pm \nAges 11 – 15 \nWe believe our journey with Shakespeare should start young. Bell Shakespeare’s Intro to Shakespeare Primary workshop is designed to immerse students in Shakespeare through playful and interactive storytelling. Our teaching artists will take young students on a two-hour narrative journey in an introduction to Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ Students will learn about character\, language techniques\, and expanding vocabulary. We’ll intersperse creative and critical thinking activities throughout so you can continue to explore Shakespeare long after we’ve gone. Most importantly\, we will deliver an entertaining\, engaging and informative Shakespeare immersion that will have students on their feet\, speaking and playing with Shakespeare. \nThis workshop has been very kindly subsidised by Bell Shakespeare \nMaximum number of participants – 25 \nWorkshop will be held at Bell Shakespeare premises – Pier 2/3\, Walsh Bay Arts Precinct\, Hickson Road\, Dawes Point (in between The Rocks and Barangaroo) \nPlease note: an accompanying adult and younger (non-participating) siblings are permitted to attend as audience but need to be very quiet (noises\, even whispers\, carry and can be disruptive).  We strongly suggest that if you have younger children\, that you sit outside the room with them as it is difficult for them to be quiet and sit still for the two hours of the workshop.  If you want a chat\, then there are tables and chairs outside the workshop room or outside the pier with beautiful views of the Harbour and lots of restaurants/cafes.  Once you are inside the workshop room\, we respectfully ask that you not move from there as this can be very disruptive for the teacher(s) and the workshop participants.
