SUMMARY:Junior Herbalist Club
DESCRIPTION:Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) is a 1-3 year extracurricular course for children (aged 7+) which runs for 90 minutes\, once a month\, for 10 months of the year. \nJunior Herbalist Club has been designed to engage and educate children\, on a journey of discovery through play to learn about the healing and medicinal plants all around them in a safe and supervised environment. The course covertly incorporates core subjects including English\, Maths\, Biology\, Chemistry\, Botany\, Latin and Cookery\, as well as helps children to gain in confidence\, improve fine motor control and develop a new skill set. \nEach month the children learn about the medicinal uses of plants and make something to take home (lavender bags\, lip balms\, bath bombs and much more!!). JHC has been planned so that each month the children build on their knowledge and skills. In the second year\, the tasks become more complex\, building on the skill set developed in the first year. At the end of each session the children are given a worksheet to complete so they can develop a portfolio of learning. \nThe course includes: \n\nIdentification of common herbs growing all around\nSafety – which herbs are safe to use and which are poisonous\nFolklore – taught through stories and songs\nHow to grow and harvest herbs\nMedicinal uses of common herbs\nHow to use a variety of common herbs for first aid\nHow to make a variety of herbal preparations to keep and take home\nRespect for all plants and their environment\n\nJHC was created and developed by Medical Herbalist Mel Hornby and has been delivering herbal education to children in the UK since 2014\, and is now available in Australia for the first time. \nHere is some feedback from previous years: \n“I really enjoyed learning the different uses of herbs and about the variety of plants\, especially the ones that are often considered weeds\, and are actually beneficial and can be used in a number of ways. I liked how we would make things at the end of the lesson to show us how to put the properties of the plant into practice. I liked how the classes were set outside and how they were practical. The plants weren’t just pictures in a book. We could see\, touch and smell them. I liked how each week was a different plant or two. Made it easy to focus on rather than just having a brief overview on a bunch of things.” ~Allie \n“I have learnt about how plants and nature can help us to heal our bodies\, and that we can make our own medicines without going to the doctor for everything. I enjoyed watching Virginia prepare and cook the herbs to make medicines from nature\, and learning in a group with other homeschoolers. I would recommend other children come to JHC next year because in every class there is something new that you will find out about. Also you get to take something home at the end of every class – that the group has made.” ~Eloise \n \n  \n  \nVirginia Maddock has been a qualified herbalist since 2000 and will be continuing this wonderful education in plant healing for children in the Sutherland Shire\, starting in February. (Other areas will be considered with appropriate numbers of bookings\, so get in contact and get a group together!). \nCost is $400 per year (or 4 x $120 paid each term). Monthly on Thursdays in Caringbah South at 10:30am-12pm (numbers dependent). \n  \n  \n  \nDates:\nFebruary 19\nMarch 19\nApril 23\nMay 21\nJune 18\nJuly 23\nAugust 20\nSeptember 17\nOctober 15\nNovember 19 \nEmail: vi******@*******************om.au for enquiries and expressions of interest.

SUMMARY:Woodworking classes for homeschoolers (Term 1) - Weekly on Wed in February
DESCRIPTION:Woodwork for start of 2026!  3 spots remaining. \n\n\n\nWe have secured a woodwork class for this term at ‘Among the Trees’ in Marrickville – both Luke and Noel are available for us starting Wed 4 Feb.\n\n\n\nTiming is same as last year with two teachers (each student also needs an adult helper): \n\nFour sessions on Wednesdays 1-2.30pm at Among The Trees in Marrickville.\nWednesday 4 Feb\nWednesday 11 Feb\nWednesday 18 Feb\n\nWednesday 25 Feb \n\n\n\nCost: $360 per child – we need 10 kids (7 spaces already taken). Ages 8 and up.  Each child needs an adult to attend with them.\n\n\n\nThe project Luke has suggested is a stool which is a self contained activity (ie: you come out with a stool after 4 weeks) but then\, trickily\, those wanting to do second term can turn it into a chair. So you can make it a 1-2 term activity where skills build\, with satisfying outcomes each time.\n\n\nPlease email su************@***il.com (SHEN member and one of one of the HS attendees\, coordinating our booking and payments) if you are interested.  Or text Sue on 0417 166 862.

SUMMARY:Future Health Worldbuilding Competition 2025 - Info sessions 30th Aug & 10 Sept
DESCRIPTION:This year\, NSW Health is inviting students across the state to take on a unique and imaginative competition:\nto step into the future and decide what comes next.\nThe Future Health Worldbuilding Competition 2025 is a call to action for young people to explore their creativity\, critical thinking\, and sense of social responsibility. \nWorldbuilding is the practice of imagining\, designing\, and communicating the systems\, values\, and environments of an alternative or future world. It draws on skills in storytelling\, systems thinking\, ethics\, and innovation which are all essential for thinking critically and creatively about change. \nStudents in Years 7-10 are invited to imagine and create a vision of a future healthcare system. Through art\, writing\, video\, storytelling\, design\, or prototypes\, they’ll craft their own future world where care is re-imagined for people\, communities\, and the planet. \nTheir ideas won’t be graded but they’ll be taken seriously. Submissions will help inform NSW Health’s strategic planning. Finalists will attend a Future Health Symposium at Westmead in Term 4\, and winners will be offered a bespoke\, behind-the-scenes tour of an innovative health care space and other great prizes. \nWhere it links to learning \nStudents will naturally draw on knowledge and skills from: \n\nScience – understanding systems\, health\, and the role of innovation\nPDHPE – exploring wellbeing\, care equity\, and community health\nTechnology – applying design thinking and digital creativity\nEnglish – crafting compelling narratives and persuasive ideas\nCareers & Civics – imagining their future role in public life and shared systems\n\n  \nIt’s also tightly aligned with NSW General Capabilities and IB Approaches to Learning\, from creative and critical thinking to communication and intercultural understanding.  How to get involved: \nSupport your students – share the website with them. Encourage them to watch the supporting materials and access the Canva workbook. \nJoin our Live Info Session – we’ve got two upcoming sessions… Sat 30th August 1-2pm and Wed 10th Sept 5-6pm.\nGet all your questions answered\, hear from the organisers\, and learn how easy it is to support students through this challenge. \nRegister for updates – Stay in the loop with reminders\, resources\, and inspiration to share with your students. SUMMARY:Homeschoolers giving back: Volunteer session at Thread Together
DESCRIPTION:Homeschoolers giving back: Volunteer session at Thread Together \nWhat: One-off volunteering session at NFP Thread Together. The charity receives donations of unsold clothes from big retailers and gets them to Australians in need – after natural disasters\, women and children leaving domestic violence\, and others in crisis. \nDuring the session our group of 20 kids will take the new clothing donated from retailers and sort it into different categories and sizes. Thread Together relies on 6000 volunteers a year to do this! Parents can accompany their child but don’t need to pay. We will also learn where the clothes will go and who needs them. \nVOLUNTEERING SESSION DETAILS: \nWhen: 9-11am\, Tuesday 3 June (please arrive 5 minutes early so we can start on time) \nWhere: Unit 21\, Discovery Cove Industrial Estate\, 1801 Botany Road\, Banksmeadow (next door to the Discovery Cove Cafe). \n Parking: There are allocated parking bays around the warehouse. There is also plenty of street parking on Botany Road. A parking map is also below. \nAge group of participants: Best for 10yo plus although kids younger may join if you think they will be able to participate. \nWhat to bring:  A full water bottle\, and a positive\, can-do attitude! Please wear comfy clothing and closed toed shoes. \nCost:  $33 per child ($30+GST) \nHow to book: We need to pay as one group so please contact the organiser (a SHEN parent) for payment details – she will then pay on our group’s behalf. \nAbout Thread Together (great to look at with your child before the session): \n https://threadtogether.org/ \nParking map: https://threadtogether.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Thread-Together-Parking-Map-Marked-Up.pdf \nGeneral volunteer FAQs: (note our session is 2hrs not 3.5hrs\, as kids/schools usually do this shorter session) – https://threadtogether.org/volunteer-faqs/ \nHere’s how they describe their work: \nAt Thread Together\, we believe having access to new clothes plays a vital role in restoring dignity and creating brighter futures for those who need it most. \nWe source brand-new excess clothing and shoes from fashion brands and retailers\, and distribute them at no cost to people in our community who are doing it tough\, such as those experiencing homelessness\, survivors of domestic abuse and youth at risk. We also support individuals and families affected by natural disasters.
